Organizational Background

Nike, Inc. is a global company headquartered in the United States that specializes in creating, developing, producing, and distributing footwear, clothing, equipment, accessories, and services. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts are Nike’s primary target market. It sells sports footwear, clothes, and accessories, such as running shoes, basketball shoes, soccer cleats, and more. In addition to traditional coaching methods, the business now provides digital coaching, mobile fitness applications, and tailor-made workout programs. Athletes, sports teams, fitness fanatics, and regular people comprise different segments of Nike’s client base. The firm participates in business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) trade, selling to end users through its own shops, online platforms, and wholesalers and distributors. North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America are among the many regions where it does business. Beaverton, Oregon, in the United States, is home to the company’s headquarters. Nike is frequently listed as one of the world’s most valuable brands, despite its massive global workforce of over 75,000 individuals (Carty, 1997).

Current Technological Challenges

Throughout its operations, Nike encounters several technical obstacles. Some major challenges Nike faces in the present technology world are addressed below.

Data Privacy and Security: Like many other companies, Nike must protect the privacy and security of its customers’ personal information as it increasingly relies on digital tools to do business. In order to keep its consumers’ confidence, the corporation must adhere to data protection laws like GDPR and CCPA (Phelps, Nowak and Ferrell, 2000).

Supply Chain Management: Nike is a worldwide firm with a complicated supply chain, which presents issues for the supply chain management. The firm uses blockchain technology to increase openness and boost supply chain effectiveness (Min, Zacharia, and Smith, 2019).

E-commerce and Digital Marketing: Nike’s e-commerce business has expanded rapidly. Despite the expansion, the corporation now confronts the issue of providing its clients with a consistently positive online shopping experience. The business has to put money into cutting-edge techs like AI and machine learning to provide customers with a more customized experience and boost the effectiveness of its digital marketing campaigns (Wang et al., 2023).

Sustainability: Nike has taken steps to become a more sustainable company, and technology may play a key part in this endeavor. To lessen its negative environmental effects, the firm should use cutting-edge innovations like renewable energy, circular design, and eco-friendly materials (Drejer and Riis, 1999).

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality: When it comes to augmented and virtual reality, Nike is actively experimenting to improve the consumer experience and open up new channels for advertising. Although the firm has great potential, it faces technological hurdles such as the prohibitive cost of creating AR/VR content and the scarcity of AR/VR hardware (Wedel, Bigné and Zhang, 2020).

Digital Transformation

Digital transformation can help Nike overcome its technological challenges and seize new opportunities in the sports apparel and footwear industry (Westerman, Bonnet and Mcafee, 2015). The following are some digital transformation objectives that Nike can pursue to mitigate the above challenges:

1. To enhance data privacy and security, Nike can implement advanced cybersecurity measures such as multi-factor authentication, encryption, and continuous monitoring of its IT systems. The company can also invest in employee training to increase awareness of data protection regulations and best practices.

2. Nike can leverage blockchain technology to improve supply chain visibility and traceability. The company can implement a blockchain-based platform to track the movement of its products from suppliers to customers, enabling real-time inventory tracking and reducing the risk of counterfeit products.

3. Nike can use advanced analytics and machine learning algorithms to personalize the customer experience and improve its digital marketing efforts. The company can also invest in digital platforms that enable seamless integration between its online and offline channels, providing customers with a consistent experience across all touchpoints.

4. Nike can leverage advanced technologies such as renewable energy, circular design, and sustainable materials to reduce environmental impact. The company can use data analytics to measure and monitor its sustainability performance and set targets for continuous improvement.

5. Nike can create immersive brand experiences using augmented reality and virtual reality technologies. The company can develop AR/VR content that allows customers to visualize and customize products, enhancing the shopping experience and increasing engagement.

Use of Digital Agility Business Model

In today’s fast-paced business world, where companies must be able to quickly adapt to changing market conditions and emerging technologies in order to remain competitive, digital agility is becoming an increasingly important trait for businesses to possess. The Digital Business Agility Model serves as a guide for achieving digital agility and comprises three essential components: hyperawareness, informed decision-making, and rapid execution.

Hyperawareness: Hyperawareness is gaining a significant understanding of market tendencies, customer behavior, and the competitive landscape through data analytics and real-time monitoring. For businesses to achieve hyperawareness, they need to invest in advanced analytics tools and cultivate a data-driven culture that encourages lifelong education and creative endeavors. Nike can use hyperawareness to track sales data and customer feedback in real time, which enables the company to quickly identify emerging trends and make decisions based on accurate information (Stonehouse and Konina, 2020).

Making Informed Decisions: Making informed decisions involves using data-driven insights to make decisions as quickly as possible. For businesses to make decisions based on accurate and up-to-date information, they need to ensure that they can analyze and interpret the information at their disposal effectively. Through informed decision-making, Nike can swiftly react to developing trends and adjust its product offerings to meet the requirements of its customers better (Awan et al., 2021).

Fast execution: “fast execution” refers to implementing decisions and bringing products to market as quickly as possible by utilizing agile methodologies and collaborating across functional areas. In order for businesses to achieve fast execution, they need to destroy silos and foster an environment that encourages experimentation and innovation. Nike can quickly implement new product designs and marketing campaigns thanks to the company’s fast execution, which enables the company to react quickly to shifting market conditions (Kirchmer, 2017).

Implementation of New Technological Trends

As a global leader in the sports apparel and footwear industry, Nike can benefit from implementing new technological trends to detect the change and adjust its business model in the future. The following are some of the key technologies that Nike can leverage to achieve this goal:

1 Robotic Process Automation (RPA): RPA involves using software robots to automate repetitive tasks such as data entry, invoicing, and inventory management. By implementing RPA, Nike can reduce manual errors and increase process efficiency, freeing employees to focus on more strategic tasks. For example, Nike can use RPA to automate the process of tracking inventory levels and ordering new products, ensuring that it always has the right products in stock to meet customer demand (Axmann and Harmoko, 2020).

2 Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: AI and machine learning can help Nike to gain deeper insights into customer behavior and preferences, enabling it to make more informed decisions about product development, marketing, and sales. Nike can use AI and machine learning to analyze large volumes of customer data and identify patterns and trends that would be difficult for humans to detect. For example, Nike can use machine learning algorithms to personalize the customer experience by recommending products based on previous purchases and browsing behavior (Tong, Luo, and Xu, 2019).

3 Quantum Computing: Quantum computing is a nascent technology that can potentially transform how businesses operate. By leveraging quantum computing, Nike can perform complex calculations and simulations much faster than traditional computers. This can help Nike to optimize its supply chain, design new products, and develop more accurate sales forecasts (de Wolf, 2017). For example, Nike can use quantum computing to simulate the performance of its products under different conditions, enabling it to identify areas for improvement and develop more innovative products.

4 Metaverse and Extended Reality: Metaverse and extended reality technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, can help Nike create immersive brand experiences that engage customers and increase brand loyalty. Nike can use these technologies to allow customers to visualize and customize products, virtually try on clothes and shoes, and experience Nike products in a virtual environment. For example, Nike can create an augmented reality app that allows customers to try different shoes and see their looks in real-time, increasing engagement and driving sales (Bushell, 2022).

In today’s global and fast-paced business environment, digital collaboration tools have become essential for building cohesive teams and fostering innovation. This report will critically evaluate and advise on some collaborative technologies that Nike, a global leader in the sports apparel and footwear industry, should implement to develop a digital-ready culture (Dubey, Sharma and Sangle, 2020).

Collaborative Technologies and Their Impact on Nike

Microsoft Teams: Microsoft Teams is a platform for collaborative working that enables teams to communicate with one another and work together in real-time. Instant messaging, video and audio conferencing, file sharing, and task management are just some of the features offered by this platform. Because it can help streamline communication and collaboration across Nike’s global operations, Microsoft Teams is an ideal tool for Nike to use (Talarico, 2022).

Slack: Slack is yet another platform for collaborative work that has become increasingly popular over the past few years. In a manner analogous to Microsoft Teams, it enables teams to communicate with one another and collaborate in real-time. Slack, on the other hand, has a more streamlined interface, primarily focusing on task management and messaging. Slack allows Nike to enhance the communication and collaboration between its global operations team members and teams (Talarico, 2022).

Zoom: Zoom is a platform for video conferencing that enables teams to hold virtual meetings, webinars, and video calls. Zoom is referred to as “Zoom.” Because it allows teams to communicate face-to-face regardless of location, this tool is ideal for Nike and how it is used. Nike’s ability to hold virtual meetings with team members and teams across its global operations can be enabled by the use of Zoom, which in turn reduces the need for travel while simultaneously increasing productivity (Talarico, 2022).

Asana: Asana is a project management tool that enables teams to manage tasks and projects collaboratively. Asana is known by its acronym, Asana. It offers a variety of features, such as the tracking of tasks, the collaboration of teams, and the management of projects. Because it enables teams to collaborate on projects in real-time, track progress, and efficiently manage tasks, Asana is an ideal tool for Nike (Talarico, 2022).

Trello: Trello is a visual collaboration tool that enables teams to manage projects and tasks using boards, lists, and cards. Trello was created by the company Trello. Because it provides a visual overview of projects, it is an ideal tool for Nike. It enables teams to prioritize tasks, collaborate on projects, and track progress in real-time. This makes it an ideal tool for Nike (Talarico, 2022).

Advantages of Tools

Implementing these collaborative technologies can facilitate Nike in developing a culture that is prepared for the digital age. The use of these tools comes with some advantages, some of which are listed below:

Better Communication: Collaborative technologies like Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Zoom allow teams to communicate in real-time, regardless of where they are physically located. Because of this, communication and collaboration are improved, which reduces the need for travel and boosts overall productivity (Simon, 2021).

Streamlined Workflows: Collaborative technologies such as Asana and Trello enable teams to manage tasks and projects collaboratively, thereby lowering the risk of duplication and increasing the amount of work that can be completed in the same amount of time (Simon, 2021).

Increased Productivity: Using collaborative technologies enables teams to work together in real-time. This results in a reduction in the amount of time required to finish tasks and projects, which in turn increases productivity and lowers costs (Simon, 2021).

In conclusion, Nike stands to gain a significant amount from implementing collaborative technologies that enable teams to communicate and collaborate in real-time, irrespective of where they are physically located. Nike can streamline communication and collaboration across its global operations by cultivating a digitally ready culture that embraces these technologies.

Important Digital Leadership Skills

To maintain a competitive advantage in the modern marketplace, it is necessary to undergo a continuous process known as digital transformation. This process requires the development of new capabilities, structures, and ways of working. Developing new skills is required for effective digital leadership, which involves leading, inspiring, and enabling teams to embrace digital technologies fully. Digital leadership is essential for driving this transformation. In this report, we will analyze and make recommendations regarding essential digital leadership skills that Nike, a global leader in the sports apparel and footwear industry, needs to develop to support digital transformation (Warner and Wäger, 2018). These suggestions will be presented in the context of the report.

1 Visionary Thinking: To achieve digital transformation, an organization must have a distinct vision and strategy for integrating digital technologies throughout the business. Nike’s digital leaders need to be able to think ahead to the future to anticipate the potential impact that digital technologies may have on the company’s operations and develop a strategy for the company’s digital future. They need to articulate this vision to stakeholders in an understandable way and motivate them to accept digital transformation (Ha, 2019).

2 Agility and Adaptability: Because digital transformation is ongoing, digital leaders need to possess both agility and adaptability to keep up with the latest emerging trends and technologies. They need to be able to make quick course corrections, modify their strategies in response to shifting conditions, and be comfortable with taking risks that have been carefully evaluated (Bresciani et al., 2021).

3 Data-Driven Decision Making: Because digital technologies generate vast amounts of data, digital leaders need the skills to analyze and interpret this data to make decisions based on it. They must recognize patterns and insights from the data and apply this knowledge to make educated decisions regarding digital transformation initiatives (Park and Datnow, 2009).

4 Collaborative Mindset: The mindset of collaboration is necessary to complete digital transformation projects which involve multiple teams and departments. Leaders in the digital space need to collaborate to bring teams together, improve communication, and foster an environment that encourages innovation. In order for them to be able to drive digital transformation initiatives, they need to have the ability to break down silos and foster cross-functional collaboration (Budde et al., 2022).

5 Customer-Centricity: Meeting customers’ needs should be the primary focus of digital transformation, and digital leaders need to have a customer-centric mindset to succeed. They need to understand customers’ requirements, preferences, and behavior patterns and then use this data to develop digital strategies that result in an enhanced customer experience (Burchardt and Maisch, 2019).
